The Ichthus ( in Greek ) is a Greek word meaning fish. It is an acronym in Greek for the words Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.

When one Christian met someone he suspected was a fellow believer, he might draw a curve, half of the Ichthus symbol, in the dirt or sand.

If the second person was a Christian, he could complete the drawing by adding the second curved line.
